Shira's birthday party

In Stuffed, Patricia Volk marvellously evokes everyday life in a New York Jewish family and what it was like to grow up around an old-fashioned family-run restaurant. I love this book!

And - oh bliss - this Sunday we had a little ‘stuffed’ experience of our own, thanks to Shira and Aharon, our kitchen princess and prince from Israel. We couldn’t stop ourselves shoveling in her killer brownie-cake and his homemade pita bread, hummus and loukoumades: deep fried dough with syrup. The Turkish word lokma means 'mouthful' and indeed, it was a wonder we found some moments in between chewing to make some conversation.

The sun, a nice view over Sydney harbor from Mcmahons Point, good company and food and drinks... in the early evening we waddled back to the train station, pretty satisfied. And stuffed.
