Movie under the stars and wine festival in Hyde Park

January and February used to be the gloomy couple I’d rather skip, but Down Under they turn out to be a sunny and dynamic duo! Just the right temp and a parade of fun festivities: Jan and Feb bloom in this place. And so do we, because who would not be happy spending their weekend in parks, watching movies and enjoying fine wines and finger food. I rest my case.

Weekend minutes. Friday afternoon: my first week working at Uniting Creative needed a proper celebration so Richard came to meet me at Pittstreet, where I spent my days as Promotions Officer for a wonderful charity project – Living is Giving - and enjoy my lunch breaks in Hyde Park (and Mango, and Mecca Cosmetics, GAP, Jigsaw… I am sponsoring the local shops, my idea of philanthropy). My proud husband did a spontaneous photo shoot of me leaving the boss’s building and buying some sushi for our dinner in the park. Sorry for this overexposure, but the parents back home requested a full on report (and I advise the rest to just scroll down for more interesting pics).

Anyway, after my model-moment, we took off to Centennial Park for picnic number 2 and The King’s Speech on the big screen, under an even bigger star-scattered sky. Even the mozzies and fighting possums (they screamed along with intense scenes, building up the suspense) in the trees added to a perfect movie experience. The farting fat guy on a beanbag beside me did not, but even so: great night!

Saturday we jumped on the train to Town Hall again (but as a commuter at 8 in the morning, the ride seems much longer) and saw Hyde Park being transformed in Wine Wonderland: with dozens of shops lined up, offering the best brews – if you can say this of wine, sorry experts, for this offense – and a friendly chat. Armed with a glass and a bunch of coupons, we could take our pick and well… get pretty drunk in the end. In the meantime we stretched down in the sun with friends and some ‘new’ people – who you can call friends in no time. It’s like Woodstock without the mud and the pot, Creedence Clearwater Revival and free love; but hey, we keep our options open!

And now it is Sunday, a bit rainy and we have to go to IKEA to find ourselves a bed we can actually rest in; the freebee thing helped us out, but with more than full time jobs and lots of activities in the weekend, we need a mattress that doesn’t launch you towards the ceiling when your spouse moves a limb in his/her sleep. So yes, we have a jealous-making Sydneysider life but there are some downers too. But I am not going to bore you with them. Cheers and have a good one!
